What to Check Before You Invest

Before you invest in a product to private label, you have to make sure that the company is legitimate. It can be helpful if they have been verified by a third-party, which is what some sourcing guides offer.

You want to make sure the product you’re getting is of top quality and that your customers will be glad to receive it. Reviews, and your reputation, really do matter.

Some manufacturers take great pictures and do a nice job of talking things up, but the actual product leaves a lot to be desired. Since you are private labeling, you are putting your name and reputation on the line. Be sure you always order a sample of the product so you know you are getting something legitimate. It’s definitely wise to pay the cost and shipping charges to purchase a sample before you commit to buying hundreds or thousands of them.

What to Sell

When searching for something to have manufactured for you to sell on Amazon, the criteria will be slightly different than it would be if you were searching for something to profit with by retail arbitrage.

For example, books make excellent items for retail arbitrage, but of course you’re probably not going to manufacture books and put your own label on them. So too with many other items like toys.

I don’t want to restrict your brainstorming, but I think you’ll find it useful with just a little bit of guideline that I’ve found useful.

Amazon FBA: Private Labeling (part 1)

Amazon FBA is a fantastic business model. Amazon does a great job of making it easy for people like you and me to sell physical products on Amazon.

There are two basic methods—retail arbitrage and private labeling. Retail arbitrage is when you buy products at lower prices in retail stores and sell them for a higher price on Amazon. Private labeling is when you have actual manufacturers make products for you so you can sell them under your own label.

I wrote about retail arbitrage in earlier episodes of The IM Inside Track.

This time, I’m focusing on private labeling.
