How to Choose a Topic

3D Hot Topic CrosswordThere seems to be two camps of people when it comes to choosing a topic when creating a product. There are those who already have a topic in mind and really don’t want to stop to do any digging or research beforehand—they’re sure their idea is a good one. Then, there are those who research, research, research. They stew over this topic idea and that topic idea and are ultimately unsure of which to go with.

I’m going to make an argument that you should be somewhere in the middle. The problem with those who get an idea in mind and just run with that topic is that they most likely won’t know if it’s truly a great, profitable topic. You might spend all this time working on a product only to find that it’s not a good topic at all.

One Problem Product Creation

oneproblemproductcreationYou know you want to write great, hot, profitable products. What’s the easiest way to do that and still be a huge benefit to your audience? There are information books out there that try to be everything and do everything. Many of them are fantastically comprehensive and do really well. But they also took a really long time to create.

It might surprise you, but more general books don’t always sell as well, especially for new authors. In today’s day and age, people want quick, effective, unique solutions to the exact problems or desires they have. When you focus on just one problem a group of people has, you have built in sales. They might take or leave the more general book but will buy the book that solves their problem on a whim. They’re browsing Amazon and they see exactly the book they need. Bam! They buy it.

Mindset of a Product Creator

Illustration of idea designYou’ve decided, wisely, that creating products is the next step you’d like to take in your business. You realize that it’s very important to have your own products because it can help boost your income and authority.

But, are you really ready? I hope you are and I think you are. With that said, I’ve spoken with many, many business owners who know that they should be creating and releasing products but there’s something that holds them back.

In some cases, it’s fear. It’s always scary to try something new. What if your product fails? What if your customers all ask for refunds? That’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the terrible things that could happen if you release a product and it goes wrong.

After all, it’s your reputation on the line. There are certainly those product creators who are only in it for the money and who don’t care much at all about the quality. But that’s not you. You care so much about the quality and doing right by your customers… and by yourself.

Today I’m going to discuss with you a very advanced sales tactic. Actually it’s not advanced in the application but it’s advanced in thinking. Most people do not get past the fact that they think they’re selling products. I never sell a person a product in their life – I’ve always sold people solutions.

In fact when I do my traveling to, for example, go to an internet marketing seminar, I’ll often be sitting in the airport just waiting for the plane or whatever and I’ll strike up a conversation with someone next to me. Inevitably they’ll always ask me what I do and that’s a very good question, because what do you do?
